FOWEN/RAPSEY Channell Islands
« on: Monday 29 May 06 02:03 BST (UK) »
Can anybody find any references to Catherine FOWEN and her parents.    Catherine was born abt 1833 in Guernsey and married James RAPSEY before 1856.   They emigrated from Alderney to New Zealand in 1861.   Their dau. Rosa is my gr.grandmother.   The name HAVILLAND crops up in some of her descendants - is there a coinnection to de Havilland Farm?

Hi Bevty,

I realise this isn't your Catherine, but with such an unusual name, and the Guernsey connection, I thought I'd post this in case someone can come up with a connection.

Catherine Fowen (dob 27/12/1833) married James Rapsey (dob 13/04/1830) and they emigrated to NZ.
Lived at Clifton Farm, Pareora, South Canterbury, both buried in Timaru cemetery along with their son James John and his wife Rose.  A photo of the grave available on Timaru City Council website at www.timaru@govt.nz
2 daughters, Amelia and Rose, married 2 Struthers brothers, Alexander and Henry respectively.
AMELIA
Amelia and Alexander lived in Dunedin and ran a grocery shop.  They had 8 children, 6 daughters and 2 sons.
Sons were:-
Edward Hunter Struthers who died very young
Alexander Cameron Struthers who died of war wounds in 1918.
Of the 6 daughters, 3 never married, 2 of those unmarried were twins.
Daughters were:-
Agnes Fowen Struthers who married and lived in Dunedin
Frances Amelia Struthers who married and lived in Dunedin
Alice Rapsey Struthers – twin of Flora
Flora Stewart Struthers – twin of Alice
May Hart Struthers
Evelyn Anna Struthers who married and lived in Dunedin
The last of Agnes’s 3 children is 93 and recently moved to a Rest Home in Te Awamutu.  Agnes’s great great grand daughter is also named Amelia
2 of Evelyn’s 3 children are alive, 1 in Dunedin and 1 in Toronto or Ottawa
Frances has a daughter alive and in Christchurch, don’t know about her son
ROSE
Rose and Henry had 6 sons and 1 daughter.  Don’t know where they settled.
One of Rose’s grandsons farmed at Hawea Flat and died relatively recently

Agnes Fowen Struthers was my grandmother, and the newest Amelia (9 months old) is my granddaughter.  She was named without her parents knowing that there had been an Amelia before.
