Rankins of Kilsyth

Would like any info on my G/G grandfather Alexander Rankin born abt 1828 presume Kilsyth married Margaret Comrie 27/7/1852 Kilsyth. Had the newsagency at Backbrae St Kilsyth.

These are the children showing for an Alexander and Margaret Comrie on IGI which probably relate to your couple. With the exception of the first birth in 1853 which is a submitted entry, all the rest are actual extracts, post official registration in 1855:

6. ALEXANDRA RANKIN Birth: 23 FEB 1863 Kilsyth, Stirling, Scotland
7. WILLIAM RANKIN Birth: 03 JUN 1867 Kilsyth, Stirling, Scotland
8. MARGARET MC INNES RANKIN Birth: 13 APR 1855 Kilsyth, Stirling, Scotland
9. ROBERT RANKIN Birth: 13 JUN 1853, Christening: 10 JUL 1853 Kilsyth, Stirling, Scotland

I don't know which of their children is your line, but certainly one of the birth certs. to look at would be the 1855 cert for Margaret. The first year of official registration resulted in a wealth of info being included in BMDs that year and should hopefully give you more background on Alexander and Margaret.

What kind of info are you looking for?

Perhaps you could post what you already have, we could try and take it from there.

I looked for a birth (in the British Vital Records) for an Alexander Rankin born 1828 +/- 5 years but although there were 8 of them born in Scotland, none were born in or near Kilsyth.

I couldn't find the births for any children either for Alexander and Margaret Comrie but this may be because any children they had were after the date of Statutory Regsitration (1855). Obviously they did have offspring so you're best bet is to check on Scotland's People.

Thanks for your reply and yes Monica this is my family and my line coming from Margaret McInnes Rankin born 13 Apr 1855 at  Kilsyth. What I have is:
Alexander Rankin born 22 Oct 1827 Kirkintilloch died 18 May 1907 Kilsyth mar.27 Jul 1852 at Kilsyth to Margaret Comrie born abt 1830 died 31 May 1892 at Kilsyth and children as you listed Monica.
Alexanders father was Robert Rankin (no other details)
Alexanders mother was Margaret Smith ( "     "  )
Margaret Comrie's father was Peter Comrie born abt 1791 died 1 Feb 1867 Kilsyth (no other details)
Margaret Comrie's mother was Margaret McInnes (no other details)

There are no marriage details showing on IGI for Alexander's parents but these are the children showing for this couple, including Alexander:

2. ROBERT RANKIN  Birth: 24 JAN 1815 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton, Scotland
3. ROBERT RANKIN Birth: 13 MAR 1825 Christening: 27 MAR 1825 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton, Scotland
4. ALEXANDER RANKIN Birth: 22 OCT 1827 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton, Scotland
5. WILLIAM RANKIN Birth: 13 DEC 1812 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton, Scotland


For Margaret Comrie, there are also no marriage details showing for her parents and only one potential sibling shows on IGI:

DANIEL COMRIE  Christening: 01 MAR 1832 Kilsyth, Stirling, Scotland

Given the dates of these births, you should hopefully be able to find these families on the 1841/51 censuses and gain more info about them that way (from the 1851 you can find out where their parents were born). Also, you might be fortunate and find Alexander and Margaret's parents still living after 1855 (you say that Peter Comrie died in 1867). With the introduction of official registration in 1855, if their parents died after this date, you should be able to find out details about Alexander and Margaret's grandparents and be able to get back one more generation.
