Defence Peronnel Records - worthwhile?
« on: Monday 29 May 06 13:05 BST (UK) »
Hey, first time posting here - rather new to the whole family history thing in general.

But basically, thinking of requesting an old army personnel record for a distint relative, who was KIA in WWI.

How much info do these records normally contain?  And I'm picking its a long shot hoping for details of parents or next of kin right?

Hi Slater

Welcome to rootschat

I think the following records  are worthwhile getting, on a couple of the records the service detail were quiet long and extensive and there were also a couple of recommendations of books that were written about the unit that my relatives serviced in.

Service Number

Personal Details
Date & Place Birth
Religion
Marital Status
Occupation
Address

Employer

Description
Height
Weight
Complexion
Eyes
Hair

Next of Kin
Address
Place of Birth

Service Record
Chronological sequence of postings, includes hospitalisations and promotions

Medals Awarded
Who may have received them

hope this helps

I should also mention that not only on the next of Kin did I get the Father's name but I also had a sister's name, this will of course be different for everyone depending on whether the parents are still living at the time the person enter the service.

Because one of my relatives was KIA I was given details of where it was believed he died and also the court inquest.
