Michelin Guide

Hi there,

I have in my possession the Michelin Guide to the British Isles 1920.This is only the fifth such guide published.

This book provides a fascinating insight into the trials and tribulations of motoring, together with some social history,in the first quarter of the 20th century. There is,for instance,a paragraph on male servants and the taxation payable for having one as a chauffeur. One of the items on changing wheels has illustrations of a man in uniform changing the wheel. The care etc. of tyres covers some thirty pages. There's even advertisements for guides to the battle fields, just two years after the end of the war.

There is a mystery, however,as to how my family came to be in possession of this book, but no doubt it is something to do with my Grandfather.

The name and address inside is H.S.Stanhope,Lion Hotel,Montgomery.

So Stanhope family, may I take this opportunity to crave your indulgence for not returning your book for some eighty six years!
