hi ..any advice appreciated...my g.g.grandmother was mary ellen jones born 1861 in garston,lancs(now liverpool)..she married a sailor from helogoland named carl freidrich sacht.born 1848..i have them on 1901 census,but would like mary`s parents names...carls details ,i can`t obtain as he`s from helogoland,which was british owned,but is now german owned...any advice on either please....regards....allan

The way I have been tracking past ancestor's name is by sending for the birth certificate and going from there. Hope this helps, Lynn

I've looked at the 1871 census, but there are just too many possibilities - you need her father's name/occupation.
