Do you have Mary's approximate age Carol? It might help narrow things down.
Did they move to England permanently?

From Census she was b 1811. On all Census she was the same age as Her husband and he was born in 1811 Parish Carluke. Mary died in England but i have not found her Death yet. I found one Mary Johnstone that fitted the bill but she was the wrong Mary as her Parents were Christopher and Winifred. This Mary died in 1851 and  my Mary was still alive in 71.
The problem is they both married a John Lawrie/Laurie in 1831 in Troqueer.
Hoping someone can help.
Regards Carol

Hi Carol

You say

This Mary died in 1851 and  my Mary was still alive in 71.
The problem is they both married a John Lawrie/Laurie in 1831 in Troqueer.

I can only find one Mary Johnstone/various spellings marrying one John Laurie/Lawrie in Troqueer in 1831. I've checked Scotlands People and the IGI.

How do you know that there were two?

What religion where they?

.... and the only Mary Johnstone/variations that I can find bpt Troqueer (although there are 46 in Scotland as a whole) in the period 1809-1811 is:

GRO REF: 882/00 0002 (Scotlands Peopl)

22 of August 1809 to James Johnstone and Helen Hunter

I'm sure you found this on the IGI as well.

Of course, she might have been from a parish other than Troqueer.

The names of her children don't seem to reflect these possible parents - do they match up with any of John Lawrie/Laurie's ?

I have John Laurie married Mary Johnstone 4 Nov 1831 Troqueer and John Lawrie married Mary Johnstone 16 Oct 1831 Troqueer. One of these couples are mine.
My John Laurie and Mary Johnson had the following Children, David Mc Burnie Laurie b 1832 ?? Troqueer,Mary Scott Laurie b 1835 Leeds, William Johnston Laurie b 1839 Leeds and John Laurie b 1842 Leeds ( my gg Grandfather ). I believe my John Laurie's Parents were Robert Laurie/Lawrie and Jean Scott. This makes sense as Mary has her grandmother's Maiden name. I am thinking maybe Mary Snr's mothers maiden name may have been Mc Bernie but can not find any one that fits the bill.
I Will have a look at James Jonhstone and Helen Hunter in the morning but James and Helen are not names passed down.

They are both on IGI. Some one on GR found the Oct marriage yesterday and emailed me. I found the Nov marriage on IGI about 5 yrs ago and thought it was mine.

Hi Carol

Where  on the IGI did you get the Nov marriage from?

SP has:

20th Nov 1831
Margaret Johnstone marrying David McBurnie  :o :o :o

Added: btw this is also on the IGI - nothing about 4th November either place (SP or IGI)
[/i]
Now there's a turn up ??? ??? ???

Added: but the David McBurnie Laurie is the s/o Mary Johnstone and John Laurie on SP

Now we have a McBurnie but not a Lawrie

I'll leave you to ponder that one.

Added: And guess what I've found:
26 March 1806 Troqueer Margaret d/o James Johnstone and Helen Hunter
so, possibly, the 'McBurnie' was  after Mary's brother in law
