I have a James Lucas French married Mary Deem Honiton 1804 the wedding notice says March 6th 1804 James "Bridport" witnessed by John Sexton What is the Bridport also one of his children James french born 1813 Honiton died 1814 it states James French {Lucas} died 1814 why put the name Lucas like that any help would be great Thanks harriet ???

Isn't Bridport a town on the Dorset/Devon border.  Could it be where they got married.  Or where James came from.

Look's as though it was to be clear that he was'nt a frenchman?
[Lucas] may have been the prefferred name,not baptised as?

I agree with Goggy - that Lucas may have been a prefferred name. On my Great Grandfather's death certificate it says Cecil Leonard "Charles" Hill which is similar.

Also, Bridport (yes, in Dorset) would be James French's hometown.

I checked Bridport on the map, it's only about 15 miles from Honiton, so as I said it could be where James was born?
