Soutar/Lesslie or Lighthouses
« on: Friday 02 June 06 12:39 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace my Soutar line, my G-G-Grandfather Simon Soutar was born 31st March 1837 in St Bride Isle of Man.  I am told his father worked at the time for the Royal Navy a lighthouse there, his name John.  I have found a listing in the Scotich archives for a Jean Lesslie (his mother) and a John Soutar who were married on 6th July 1828 in St Bride (both I believe are Scottish).  I would like to find a copy of the certificate if possible.  I know there were at least 9 children, but can't find any cencus records, or bmd's.  Where do I go? Regards, Carol

HI

In addition to what I sent you via a PM I couldn't see any of them in the 1851 census.

I noticed Samuel in the later census in England with a sister down as Sarah Soutar unmarried bn 1847 Scotland so maybe they went back up north.

If he was a lighthouse keeper he would have worked for the Northern Commissioners of lights - their staff covered Scotland (IoM was an exception) and would move on basis of seniority every few years - see www.manxnotebook.com/maritime/lighthse/index.htm - their archives are in National records of Scotland and should have a complete list of his postings  - Bride (Kirk Bride not St Bride) covers the Point of Ayre light.

We're related!!  ha ha ha.  My Great great grandfather was Simon Soutar of the Isle of Man, moved to Jamaica, family owned the Temple Hall Estate.  :)

I would *love* to hear more information from anyone.  We have some from our family as well.
-Allen

ps- perhaps he doesn't show up because of the move to Jamaica... but it seems a bit young, that would be 10 years only.  I do think they may have moved back to Scotland before the move to Jamaica, but I can't be sure.  He was very important to the island... made the Kingston Warf, The first plumbing in Kingston I believe, and was also the Ambassador to Norway and Austria, I think?  I can't remember everything off hand here... I'll see what we have if there's anything written down.

pps- Is the above Census page for the whole family, or only for *all* Souter's on the island? (and is the Soutar/Souter difference common, or should we treat it as a different family?)  - Thank you for the info!!

Ha ha!  That's fantastic.  That's definitely the family.  As far as I know, we don't have any info on John Soutar and where he might be buried... John is pretty common of course, so that contributes to the problem...

Wonderful information!  :)

Thank you for that, Wendy!

ps- the family has a bit of an illustrious past- quite a bit was accomplished by them once they made it to Jamaica.  Among many things, they were the manufacturers of the (Soutar then changed to) Temple Hall Cigar which was a huge success in the UK for quite some time I believe.  [Now under different ownership I believe.]
