1901 Help Please
« on: Friday 02 June 06 14:22 BST (UK) »
Right guys

I need some serious help.

I'm looking for a George Ward ( Timber Sawyer) age unknown.  His son got married in 1928 in the register office of Stamford.  His son's residence at time of marriage was 25 Bath Row Stamford (not sure if he lived with his Father?).  His son was born in 1908.

The only other info I have is on the marriage certificate as a witness is a Mary Jane Ward.  This could be George's wife or his son's sister.

I know its not a lot to go on but could someone have a look for a George Ward in the Stamford area 1901.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Geoff

I have found a birth of a George Henry Ward which is the son of George in Samford which apparently is a district in Suffolk.

Any chance you could look up a George Ward in the Sufolk area.

Thanks

Paul

Thanks Geoff

I wonder if the birth I found has been mistranscribed and should read Stamford instead of Samford ??

Yes, it actually says Stamford 7a 361 - somehow the FreeBMD transcriber got both the district and the Volume wrong!

Hi agin Geoff

I was wondering if you could look on the 1901 census for a George Ward and his wife Mary Jane.

I have the marriage cert of his son and a witness is a Mary Jane Ward.  She could be his wife?

There is a George Frederick Ward who married Mary Jane Lynn Lincoln 7a 1293 Jun 1905.  So he would not appeared on the 1901 census married.  I wonder if there is a George F Ward out there as a Timber Sawyer on the 1901 census?

Thanks

Paul

In my experience,  marriage witnesses were often siblings.

Remembering that the birth reg you found was George Henry WARD at Stamford, I've found this marriage

George Henry WARD (son of John) to Alice SMITH (29, dau of Thomas) at Nettleham 27 Oct 1903

Free BMD has a birth

Births Dec 1911
Ward    Laura M    (Mother nee Smith)    Stamford    7a   615

suggesting the possibility that they moved to Stamford at some time

I suggest you search the BMD records on ancestry  from 1912 onwards to see if you can find a Mary Jane born there with mother's maiden name SMITH.  There seem to be no Mary Jane WARDs born in Lincoln 1903-11.

I'm afraid this GH WARD was not a sawyer in 1901, but it was nearly 30 years before the wedding happened.

Lodging in Nettleham
George H WARD 24 Working Watchmaker, Cycle maker & Photographer, Ludford Parva.

Alice SMITH was also in Nettleham with her widowed mother Mary A Smith
Alice SMITH 25 Florist, Nettleham

1881 Census shows her father's name to have been Thomas.

Good luck!
