Union House
« on: Saturday 03 June 06 11:27 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can any body tell me what Union House was in Layston, Hertfordshire in 1851. I have a possible relative living here, there are lots of other people living here, so it must be some kind of communial home.

My possible relative appears to be with others in the family, but it does not really that clear. He is listed as son, there is other siblings & a wife & a man with no title poss his father.

I would love to know what this Union House was so I can wonder how he came to be there.
Many thanks for anyones help.  :D

Union House in Layston was the poor law union workhouse for the Burtingford Union.  Your relative was thus probably there because they couldn't support themself.  However a lot of the Union Houses had an infirmary attached to them which was the equivalent of today's general hospital.
