I know its difficult but how would you go about tracing a name from the early 1800's to present day?

Best to use parish records until 1841, and then continue with OPRs but also use the census records to 1901

Anything more recent than 1901 has to be via the GRO BMD indexes.

Marriages on the indexes are relatively easy to find since the spouses name is also mentioned.   Finding the kids is the hard part since the indexes do not mention parents names.

I managed to get one line of the family to the
1940s by using electral records, and trade indexes
(not easy)!

The electoral records for my town are in the
reference library. so you have to be on the spot.

The obvious starting place is the IGI index:--

http://www.familysearch.org

Check for baptisms etc.

Use familysearch.org to find children, and the childrens' marriages, and then find them on the censuses, then just use the censuses to trace forward to 1901.
