Ship to Australia - The Emigrant
« on: Tuesday 06 June 06 10:10 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

My gt gt gt grandfather went to Australia (Maitland/Armidale) from Wiltshire in the 1840's. I think he was an assisted passenger and have found his name, along with a woman who may have become his future wife (Sarah Miles), on the Emigrant in 1849.

There is precious little information about this ship and I wonder if anyone has any info regarding where she sailed from and to which ports she disembarked the passengers. I'd like to know more detail about William and Sarah from shipping lists in NSW if anyone has access to the reels.

Thankyou

Williams - Cornwall/Wiltshire
Stroud - Wiltshire
Payne - Maitland/Armidale NSW Aus
Johnson - Wiltshire
Hardy - (NSW?) Aus
Greenland - Wiltshire

pommiecat

do you know you can order a copy of the passenger list online at NSW State records Office website, The front page should tell you where they sailed from and what ports they docked at along the voyage.

http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/searchform.aspx?id=4

I am happy to look up the reel for you tomorrow and let you know if it is worth purchasing.

Hi Pommicatty,

http://members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/shipping/mig-qld1.htm

Useful, but limited for ships by name.
It shows however the arrival of 'Emigrant' in Botony Bay in 1849, 1850 and in Brisbane [same voyage] 1850

http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/

shows"Emigrant' passenger arrivals in 1852 &1853
These passengers were full fare-paying.
The section of the website which gives 'assisted immigrant' listings is out of action today, but may also help you.
SusanBuck may be of more help than these offerings!

Thanks Sue et al for the help.

I replied before but have no idea where my message went - I'm a newbie at this so maybe I did something wrong.

Anyway - I've probably missed your visit to the NSW archives but here is all the info I have...

William Payne b 12 Apr 1829 Devizes, Wiltshire
Sarah Miles no info - married a Hardy in Aust but was later widowed.
then married W. Payne in West Maitland. They then returned to the UK.

I always wonder what made them return to the UK. I have migrated myself from England to WA and can't help thinking that if they had stayed they may have saved me the trouble of coming back!  ::)

Thanks again

Although this site has information about the 1850 voyage of the Emigrant it does have a little information on the ship itself.  My ggrandfather John Livermore was one of the passengers who arrived in Moreton Bay where the ship was put into quarantine because of an outbreak of typhus.

Hi Pommiecat,

http://www.blaxland.com/ozships/

Search the 'vessels' index [click something to something where the word 'emigrant' falls alphabetically] and you will see the few voyages of the ship and where she stopped.
my limited research suggests there were 2 vessels named Emigrant.  One a barque and one a passenger ship. Sue

Hi Pommiecat

I found the Assisted Passenger Lists for 'Emigrant' in 1849, but as I did not have William Paynes name I have only transcribed Sarah Miles and her brother William. The lists do not have anything about the ship except the date it arrived.

You may already have this info, you can order the relevant pages from NSW State Records online http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/searchform.aspx?id=4

Assisted Immigrants arriving in Sydney & Newcastle 1844-59.

I hope this is of some use to you, I will be at the State Library this weekend and will see if the original ship's passenger list with info on ports of call is on file.

Hello Sue,

Thankyou for doing the lookup for me. It is possible that Sarah Miles knew William Payne before the migration to Aus as Urchfont is a village near Devizes in Wilts where William P. was born.

I can try census info now I have an idea where Sarah was born.

Thanks & best regards
