Pete, maybe you can help me out re. Victor H YOUNG? (see post above?) Many thanks in advance.
Photo below shows his name at Menin Gate Memorial, and also the name of David VANRYN who features in this interesting BBC article from the same battles: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/from_our_own_correspondent/4951664.stm

I've pm'd you some info, but as an afterthought - your great uncle was not killed in a chlorine gas attack, he died in a bitter hand to hand fight for a hill which was defended succesfully by an understrength company - their officer was awarded the VC for this action.

Many thanks for your input Pete. I look forward to reading more. Are you referring to Hill 60?
Mat.

Yes, that's the one.

Your next task is to identify the hill!

I am interested in my great uncle Rfm 1465 Frederick J Gobell, 12th Londons "The Rangers", kia, 1.7.1916 at Gommecourt.

Hi Mark,
Saw this and wondered if you'd found anything yet. Thanks to Pete, I have been able to have a look at Vols 4 & 5, and came across a reference to Gobell F.J. on page 229 of Vol. 4 (1914). He is listed in the Company's Men with Colours from Beckton Gas Works: Occupation: Fitter's Lab. Rank: Rifleman. Regiment: 12th County of London.. (P.229).

I will keep my eyes open in case I come across anything further (photo, letter. etc.), and let you know.
Mat

Hi

Bikers post was 11 years ago, not sure he is on here now?

I think I still have the reference discs with the magazines on, will see if I can locate them.
