Please help I am researching the Johnson family in the 1871 census William and Jane appear living in Pendleton but I need to find out Janes maiden name - any ideas? note most of my family had the middle name jordan but I can't find out who's surname that was

Hi,

You need to get the marriage certificate of Jane and William.  This will give her name at the time of marriage and also her father's name.  Do you know where they may have married and roughly which year?  If so, try freebmd, not all marriages are listed but you may get lucky.  Alternatively try 1837online, but that may take more searching and is not free of charge.

If you post more details of the family in the later census it might make it easier for someone to help you.
