Woodcock marriage 1840 Marsh Lane area
« on: Saturday 10 June 06 19:10 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to find a marriage between Henry Woodcock and Theresa ? about 1840 in the Rotherham/Wickersley OR Marsh Lane area in Derbyshire - but am not having much luck. theresa was born in Marsh Lane and Henry himself was born in Tickhill, Yorkshire and I have managed to find a marriage for a henry woodcock in a place called Harworth which is just next to Tickhill in 1841 - i was wondering if he could be the one im looking for...what do u think? I found him on IGI.
Any help on the Marsh Lane side of things would be great.
Thanks
Alison

yeah i know...maybe elizabeth was her middle name or something - it seems too much of a coincidence with the places...

Hi
I do not know of a place or area in Derbyshire called Marsh Lane,
however there is a Marsh Lane, Belper, Derbyshire.

Do you have Henry/Theresa Woodcock on a Census? Can you post year of
birth etc.

I googled it and found it at Coal Aston which is just in Derbyshire between Sheffield and Chesterfield and reasonably near Rotherham but a good way from Tickhill and Harworth.

Hi

Think I have found them in 1841 Census living Eckington Derbyshire
HO 195/10  Folio 36  Line 23
Civil Parish  - Eckington,  Hundred - Scarsdale
listed as Theresa Born 1821  aged 20   born Derbyshire (dont forget 1841 Census Adult ages are
              rounded down)
Henry B 1816  not born Derbyshire
Jane B 1840.   born Derbyshire
Ann Hibbert age 13 (1828) Derbyshire

Will keep looking for the marriage.

Hi Jawit

Think you will find there are a number of Marsh Lane, The one I gave details
of is from Bartholomews Gazetteer, which also lists one in Gloucester, Lancs and Yorkshire.

This Gazetteer I have is quite ancient and I think many of the names have
just vanished over time.

Hi.

Marsh Lane is at the top end of Eckington....

The Sheffield St Peter & St Paul marriage indexes (from S&DFHS)  show a marriage between Henry WOODCOCK and Theresa STEEL between Jan 1839 and Aug 1839

The GRO reference is volume 22 page 375 registered in the March Quarter 1839 at Sheffield.

It's not unusual to find Eckingtonians marrying in Sheffield and Rotherham...

In 1841 they are actually in the village of Troway which was a hamlet of Eckington back then.
Regards

Tuppie

Hi everyone - thanks for all your help!
I know Marsh Lane very well as I'm from Gleadless myself which is just a couple of miles away!

I have Henry and Theresa on 1841 and subsequent censuses - theresa was born in Marshn lane, Eckington. I have them living in Troway in 1841 (henry was a sawyer back then and the sawmill still exists).
Maybe they could have married in Sheffield - thanks for looking them up for me.
