As I haven’t been able to trace his roots in Cavallasca, I don’t know, but have always presumed he Anglicised his name. Interestingly, I came across the fact that they considered themselves Swiss rather than Italian - maybe that had something to do with it. The borders were a bit more fluid in those days.

My grandfather x4 was Antonio Cattaneo (my relatives then follow Vincenzo; Giuseppe (often known as William) and Edith. I'm trying to find Antonio's exact date of birth; parents and place of birth.
This is the information I have so far:

Place of Birth: Cavallasca Lombardy
Parents: ?
Married 1828 Mary Ann Rymer.
