Where is it?
« on: Monday 12 June 06 19:46 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have looked on the link to the 1850 map and cannot find 2 places.

Rhymney - I can see 2 places called Rumney 1 in NW and 1 in SW. But where is Rhymney?

Pontnewydd - this is what it looks like on the census but I cannot see anything like it.

Thanks

Jane

Hi Jane,

Pontnewydd:  try looking for CWMBRAN

Quote
Pontnewydd is a suburb of Cwmbran in the county borough of Torfaen, traditional county of Monmouthshire, southern Wales, United Kingdom.
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontnewydd

Also,
Quote
Rhymney is a town located in the county borough of Caerphilly, traditional county of Monmouthshire, south Wales, United Kingdom
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhymney

Both articles include grid references and links to OS maps

Hope this helps,
Bob

Hello Jane
Pontnewydd was in Trevethin parish a few miles south of Pontypool.

PONTNEWYDD, a hamlet in the parish of Trevethan

Also in Trevethin parish a mile north of Pontypool
PONTNEWYNYDD

The town of Rhymney  often enumerated as Rumney in early census returns
was in Bedwellty Parish
The Parish of Rumney in the south of the county  was near the county border
with Glamorgan.
It is near Cardiff  and i think is now in Glamorgan.

Pontnewydd - near Trevethin near Pontypool.

Thanks to all
