A census piece is a collection of enumeration districts.  Piece numbers are generally found written in bold on either the right hand side of the census image or at the very bottom of the image.

In 1841 and 1851 the piece number will begin with the prefix H0/107
In 1861 with RG9
In 1871 with RG10
In 1881 with RG11
In 1891 with RG12
In 1901 with RG13

I believe that a  GSU number stands for for the Genealogical Society of Utah, and is a unique identifier for Mormon records.  a GSU number is not visible on a census return as far as I am aware, though I am sure someone will correct me if I am mistaken about this!

A folio number is of far more use.  This will be written in bold, on the top right corner of the image.  From 1851 a folio covered 2 consecutive pages, so every other page will not have the number printed on it.

Rick :)
