« on: Thursday 15 June 06 21:42 BST (UK) »
Hi, does anyone know if there was an orphanage in Warley/Wainstall, Nr Halifax and if so, where can I find the names of the children that were living there?
Thanks :)

We are looking at around 1880-1895, on the 1891 census she is an orphan, her name was Wilhelmena H L Smart.   "Rambler" on the Lancashire site found that information for me, but  I live near the area of Warley/Wainstalls and I have never heard of an orphanage in that area, and just wondered if anyone else had.   Mena married in Halifax in 1896 and was living in the Warley/Wainstalls area (she was 20 at the time of their marriage).

Hi Jan- I've had a good google myself and can't find anything more about Wainstalls orphanage as such but......
on the 1881 census there is at Spring mill, Warley a John Greenwood- age 64 listed as master of orphanage (School) just as I've typed it, with about 15 girls who are all listed as apprentices- all are from the Liverpool area (no Wilhelmena though).
Google some more and "Milltown Memories" Magazine has part of an article online about the "Orphans of Luddenden Dean" all girls, all orphans , from Liverpool who were taken to work at one of the mills.
I don't know if you've found this already but it's worth posting it just in case-
Births September quarter 1876 Wilhelmina Hendricks L Smart West Derby volume 8b page 442.
With West Derby being part of Liverpool I'm beginning to put 2+2 together and coming up with a possibility- how about you????
All the best

Thanks for that, I also found the information on Orphans of Luddenden Dean, I sent an email to Milltown Memories, just to see if any of their back issues had any information of an orphanage in Warley/Wainstalls, I dont know if they will reply.
