All I know is that a Joseph Mates (various spellings - Meades, Medes, etc. ), of Wybunbury married in my home village in Denbighshire in 1766. I gather that there were lots of them around the area and would love to find out about them.

He is possibly my 6 x grt grandfather.

Hi Gadget

I'm off to Wybunbury today & will have a look in the churchyard.

I did have a look for the name - & its various variations - in the Wybunbury grave register (1807-1875) but I couldn't find one useful entry.  Perhaps they had moved away from the village by this date?

Hi Jayson - good hunting.

Thanks for looking but i think they had moved. Now if it was 100 years earlier  ;)

I think Joseph must have been born 1730 - 1745 - he was of full age on the marriage bond. I've not been able to find a death record. His wife died 1795.

Do you have Joseph's baptism? If not I can get this for you.

No I don't Jayson. He moved to Chirk sometime before 1766. The marriage bond states his home parish as Wybunbury and someone on GOONS located a family of Meates/variations in the early 1700s in Wybunbury. I just have the marriage, births of children and his wife's death. I think he was a coal miner or pit sinker or something like that.

I would love it if you could find it and I'd do double summersaults all around the site  :o

Thanks

Hi Gadget

I'm afraid it's bad news! Unfortunately, I was unable to find any Mates or anything similar to that name in the parish register (baptisms) for the period you gave - 1730-1745.  It was quite a lengthy search & quite depressing when nothing turned up.

Possibly the family had had close connections with a neighboring parish, and that the family's residence in Wybunbury was of a short duration.

I couldn't see any Mates in the churchyard in Wybunbury but will have another look.

Thank you ever so much for looking Jayson. I'm ever so sorry for you that it was fruitless. The GOONS people found some earlier on, but then a gap  :(
Back to searching  :-\

Thanks again.
