Samuel Slack - Broadholme
« on: Saturday 17 June 06 16:38 BST (UK) »
My GGG Grandfather Samuel Slack is shown on the 1851 census as born c1798 in Broadham Notts. I assume that this would be Broadholme. Can anyone give me a clue as to which parish his birth would be recorded in please, and also if there is a source for NTT registers on the internet?

Broadholme was in the parish of Thorney. As you realise it is on the boarders of Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire and is now in Lincolnshire.

Thanks for your help. The only information I have is from the 1841 and 1851 census, by which time Samuel and his wife Elizabeth (b. Washingborough LIN c1788) are living in Attercliffe cum Darnall (Sheffield). They have at least 2 children (and possibly 3 more) but they were born before 1837 so there is no civil registration info. I have searched the IGI but nothing seems to quite 'fit'.

Hi Broakham,

Baptisms for Thorney are on the IGI for the years 1813-1843 only, so I'm afraid it's going to mean hunting down the parish registers.

A site I find useful for telling me what's transcribed on the IGI is

Thanks for the site info Heather - very useful. As for Samuel, I have also failed to find him on the Notts FHS baptisms cd so I'm beginning to wonder if he was Christened 'over the border' in Lincolnshire.
  Thanks again - Dave

Sadly that's because the Thorney baptisms haven't yet been transcribed by the Notts FHS. Lincs is a possible, but personally I'd check out those parish records first.
