« on: Saturday 17 June 06 22:11 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
Does any one have in their tree a ROBERT ARMSTRONG who was a a farm servant at 'Orchard' near Canonbie in or around 1855?

He was named as the father of my G Grandmother Agnes Jackson/ Armstrong born Feb 1855. in the Canonbie Kirk Records. Her mother was Charteris Jackson b 1833

Any help or ideas appreciated

Hi Judy

Have you tried looking for him on the Scotlands people web site -

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

This has all the censuses 1841-1901 so you could chase him up that way - also look for a baptism record in the OPRs on the site and any marriage or death registration.

It's pay to view but very reasonable.

Before starting, it is well worth reading Pam's guide to Scottish records:

Thanks for message.

Yes have tried Scotlands People and OPR's but have not come up with any answers yet. Robert Armstrongs born around Canonbie seem to be very illusive on the Census's

Do you have a birth record for your grt grandmother - she's obviously on the cusp of the OPR and the Official Reg.

Yes
Have birth Cert for Agnes Jackson born Feb 1855 Mother Charteris Jackson but it does not mention a father however I have her fathers name from the Canonbie Kirk Session Minute book who named Robert Armstrong as the father of Charteris Jackson's child in 1854/55. That the 'guilt' took place when they were  servants at 'Orchard'
I know about Charteris Jackson through to her death but know nothing about him apart from he was a Servant at Orchard in 1854/55.

Have a look at this on the 1851 census - SP site:

 GROS Ref - 814 -00007-00006

Peterburn, Canonbie

Farmer is John Stacks -

Robert Armstrong, 20, unmarried, farm servant, born Canonbie

It's the nearest that I can find.

Thanks for this one. I have looked at the 1851 Census before & got two others fairly close to this age but for some reason not this one and I think he is the most likely one.
Will have to try & prove it now!

Yes - one of the others is on the same page, aged 32 and farmer's son. Think the other, aged 18, was a farmer's son as well.

Worth following up.

Thanks for all your help.
I have followed some Robert Armstrongs from Canonbie and discounted them due to various reasons.

You thought that the farm where he was a servant was Petersburn but I can not find any reference to Petersburn anywhere and looking at it on the census it could be something else - any ideas. I could send you a copy off list
