help - mixed up with place names.
« on: Sunday 18 June 06 07:57 BST (UK) »
hi there, i live in New Zealand and i am having trouble with these Walsh place names.

Father seams to be born all over the place - Llanaelhaiarn  and Penmanmanor ?

dau Ann  b  Carnarvon , Trevor ?

Ann married a joseph  who was born in dudley, Worcester England, but was boarding GWYDDLWERN, MERIONETH,   1891

They married in 1895 on CONWAY /CONWY

joseph brother james boarded there to, and married Ellen from Carnarvon, Llandudno.

are these towns close..?????

and why would someone from dudley at the age of 18 and 19 go to wales, they were stonemakers/ quarryman  , and boarded with a woman that was a coal dealer..

Which i knew a Walsh person that could pronounce these names for me...

thanks
Ann

I'm in Australia so can't help too much, but I DO know that Conway and Conwy are the same place (in north Wales ... and most gorgeous it is too). I find loads of information about faraway places by doing a simple search on google. Good luck!

Hi engirusaus,

Penmaenmawr is the name you're looking for I guess; it is on the coast road between Conway and Bangor - and has a stone quarry!

Llanaelhaearn is a fair distance away on the Lleyn peninsular.

Hope this helps

Thanks Quarryman,

i see you have Roberts in your tree to,, my Worwood from England married a Roberts, whos mother was a Jones.... i cant believe how many JONES there is, every census page,

i will have another look at a old map when i get home from work,  but all the place names look the same to me, i have to look the the letters on the end of each place name, over and over...

This is my first time reseaching in wales... its been very interesting,,, place i would love to visit.

thanks again''

Best wishes
Ann

What could be more confusing is that Carnarvon/Caernarfon is not only a town but also a county.  Trevor (Trefor) is a town on the coast on the Lleyn Peninsula.  Llandudno is a town also on the coast that was in the county of Conway/Conwy.

Rather than go just to an old map you may need to have a look at the more modern maps too, due to the county boundary changes that have taken place especially in the 70's and more lately.  The best resource for this to give you the links to go to the old maps and those more modern is www.genuki.org.uk From this home page you can pick out Wales and then the counties you want to have a look at in more detail - Conwy and Carnarvonshire.  The spellings can be different too, due to the English and Welsh spelling of the counties - but you can decide which you are most comfortable with.

Happy mapping!

Rowland/s- Hughes -Caernarfornshire/Stockport Cheshire
Barnicoat - Cornwall Lancashire Stockport,Cheshire
Jones (!) - Caernarvonshire,NWales  USA - Iowa, Wisconsin, S Dakota.
Thomas - Anglesey, USA Iowa, Oregon

Hi Ann

Did some Googling to see if I could find anything to help with pronunciation.

Here are a few websites that are (I hope) interesting and may help a bit:

http://www.data-wales.co.uk/namex.htm

http://www.bangor.ac.uk/ml/whr/pronounce.htm

http://www.amlwchdata.co.uk/welsh_names_and_meaning.htm

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)
