Thank you Arranroots.

Really really great web sites...

i have a real interest in surnames and how they came about.. seems everyone  researching in Wales will have a JONES in their family then....

You would laugh at me practicing to say the place names , but i got the hang off it in the end, and have a better understanding of the language..

So thank you..

Best wishes
Ann

Hi Ann

Let's go mapping! ;)

For Trefor - you say "Trevor" but as there is no "V" the single "f" is pronounced as a"v" - oh it get's better  ???  But we can leave the pronunciation for a later date.  We let you find the flippin' place first eh!

Right here we go:-
"www.multimap.com" go to Great Britain and NI in the drop down menu and in the "place name" bit type in "Trefor" with the "F"! Two places in the great map of things will come up.  Hit No. 2 - this is the place "Trefor" I think you are seeking on the north coast of what is just on the Lleyn Peninsula!

Now you have found the north coast of Wales you can go north east for Llandudno, Conwy, Penmaenmawr etc etc!

Ann,

Llanaelhaiarn the parish has two villages, Llanaelhaiarn itself, and Trevor (Trefor), which are situated only about a mile apart. At one time Trefor was part of Llanaelhaiarn village, and only became known as Trefor in (I think) the early part of the 20th. Century.

Penmaenmawr, as has already been mentioned, is on the coast not far from Conwy and Llandudno.

The connection between Trefor and Penmaenmawr is that they both have a granite quarry. A large number of quarrymen migrated into North Wales from the 1860's onwards when the Mountsorrel Granite Co. of Leicestershire took over the Trefor Quarry. I'm not certain if there was a connection with the Penmaenmawr Quarry, but I would imagine that the men would have been willing to move between quarries in search of work.

Regards,

Keith.
