Chelsea Pensioner in 1871 - Help please
« on: Sunday 18 June 06 15:24 BST (UK) »
Hi can someone tell me how I can find out more information on a Chelsea Pensioner?

Charles Augustus Skelton is down in 1871 and 1881 as being a Chelsea Pensioner. He was born abt 1824 in Salisbury, Wiltshire and disappeared from census in 1861 and 1871. He re-appears in 1871 living in Northaw, Hertfordshire as a Chelsea Pensioner and farmer. He married in Brent Pelham, Hertfordshire in 1867.

Any help at all would be great!

Jan

Hi Jan

If he was a Chelsea Pensioner then there should be some records in the National Archives, Kew, London - see their research leaflet British Army: Soldiers' Discharge Papers, 1760-1913

If he was discharged between 1855 and 1872, these records aren't yet downloadable online but require a visit in person .......... you will need to know the regiment to find his discharge papers ...........

British Army: Soldiers' Discharge Papers, 1760-1913

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=14

I couldn't see him in the catalogue of soldiers' discharged between 1760 and 1854 (search for surname with series code WO 97) http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/default.asp

Are there any clues on his marriage certificate ???

Hi
Sounds similar to my ancestor, born around the same time (mine was b1827) and "disappeared" from census 1851-1871 (he reappears in 1881 as Chelsea Pensioner).
I have tried a number of different records at Kew but without a regiment or discharge date it is a long (and frustrating) haul!
There is a private index held by S L Davis of discharges 1855-72 which I consulted but it did not record my ancestors' details - any index is not necessarily complete, I know and it does not mean his details are not there!
WO116 & 117 can be useful but it will be a long slog.
Let me know how you get on
