Thanks Monica. I'll look some more. Interestingly she was born Ireland  ???

Just checked the marriage certificate again. Jane's parents were both alive - well not shown as deceased on the certificate.

Right - got them on the 1881:

GRO Ref - vol 899, ED 3, Page 6
52 McCulloch Place, Inch, Wigtown
Thomas McCowan, 58, Tailor, Old Luce
Sarah, 54, Ireland
with daughters Annie and Jessie

More to do........................

Added:
In 1891
Sarah, aged 65, is a widow, living at the same address as above, A seamstress, b. Ireland.

With her are daughter Jessie and grandson John Higgins, aged 2

So Thomas died 1881-1891.

1 Nov 1887 Thomas McGowan, Tailor, married to Sarah Cairns, aged 64. Parents: John McGowan, master tailor, dec. and Annie, maiden surname Lorrimer, dec.

Cause - Congestion of lungs and bronchitis

Cause of death - Cardiac disease and congestion of the lungs.
