Still desperate for info on the parents of John Clark Hairstens, birthdate unknown but could be around 1860/65.   Also his correct birthdate.
He was a Dancing Master.  In 1882 he married Jane McCowan/McGowan in Edinburgh. They went on to
have six known children, John Clark b.c.1884 Dumfries,  Mary C. b.c.1882 Stranraer,  David b.c.1887 Dumfries,  Alfred b.c.1888 Kilmarnock,  Jane b.c.1896 Partick,  Sarah b.c.1900 Dumfries.

I'll be grateful for any help with this.

I can only find Hourston in Orkney at that time on SP. Seems doubtful but does Orkney ring any bells with you - I'll try Clark next but that's worse

Thomas Hairstens (gardener) and Mary nee Clark

His parents married in Troqueer, Kirkcudbright in 1860.
Thomas down as Hairsteens.

Interestingly, I've found the birth of a John Clark, mother Mary Clark 29 April 1858.
Illegitimate - father looks like Joseph Nilsh (?) in Troqueer - can't read the address.

The handwriting is so poor that I can't read any more.

I'll down load and put it the bits I can't decipher up.

In 1861 Thomas (43) and Mary (32) Hairstens are living at 39 Church St, Maxwelltown, Troqueer. Thomas is a gardener, b. Sanquar. mary b. Troqueer.
With them is 3 year old John, son.

Think we've got him

Well the address above is now obviously 39 Church St,Maxwelltown - but Joseph who?
