I'm posting the parents of Thomas Hairsteen and Mary Clark from their marriage of 1860. The mothers maiden surnames are difficult to read. Looking again at mary Clark's mother, it loks like maiden surname Summersmith or Summerwick or something like that  ???
Russell, Annie - any ideas?

Hi Gadget
I think your summary shows why I made comment!!!

I wondered if the name was Sommervile -deceased; Summerville with only one 'L'.
Not sure if it was summer or sommer - just taken a second look and it is almost certainly 'summer'something.
Summervile kind of sums up our Scottish weather sometimes doesn't it?

On the Hairsteens side I read 'Peden' as the maiden name. Quite a common name in Ayrshire too.

Good detective work!

Thanks for the input Russell. It is definitely So/ummer something. Your knowledge of Ayrshire surnames is better than mine - I have trouble enough with the D & G ones - they are a law unto themselves. I've got a book on the weirdness somewhere. Was it something to do with the Covenanters  ::)

A possible extra piece of info on the biological father, Joseph Nichol - 19 in 1851, b. Dumfries:

Baptism

26 October 1840, John Nichol, son of Thomas Nichol and Mary Craik, Dumfries

He is the only male Nichol bpt around that time in Dumfries.
