Hi Clara,

I checked the 1871 census and found Church Terrace, Poplar.
It was on Manchester road ( still there ) close to Pier Street in Cubitt Town, Poplar.
On the Isle of Dogs.

Best wishes
Bob

Hi Again Clara.
Found this picture of Christchurch, Manchester road.
One of the rows of houses might well be Church Terrace.

Fantastic Bob  ;D

Really appreciate it - will save the pic to add into the family history narrative I've written re: my g-grandmother and her family - so she may have actually been born in one of these houses....  :o

Thanks again

If you search for Manchester Road E14 on streetmap.com  you will see a small X and a street called Gleng Road and Glen Rd.  This is Glengarnock road and used to be Church Street.  Must have been there somewhere.

Most of the East End was a stinking smoking mess at this time.  My East London ancestors all died in their 60s mostly from respiritory diseases, whereas the ones in Norfolk were in their 90s

Cheers, Sylviaann :)

Had the same thing with my Paynes and Boys - left Suffolk and Sussex for the East End in the 1860s, and were almost wiped out in their 20s and 30s due to TB.  My g-grandmother's parents (who were the ones who lived in Church Terrace) died within a month of each other in 1875 in their early 30s.  The families remaining in the countryside lived to ripe old ages...

Clara, you've probably already found Rowsell Street, Bow E3 on the map by now. I used to live there until just before the houses were demolished round about 1965/66. Whilst badly damaged during the war, some houses were still standing until the mid 60's. It was next to Turners Road and wasn't too far from Bow Common Lane and St.Pauls Way, both, I believe, are still there. It was next to the Gas Works. The houses were knocked down due to slum clearance. The school on is St.Pauls Way Trust School.
Hope this is of some interest to you.

Hi Olive Oyl

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

According to her profile, Clara hasn't been online here since 2011.

As long as her email address hasn't changed, she should receive a notification that you have posted and hopefully come back soon.
