1841 Census Southwark - SUTTON - also 1851 census
« on: Monday 19 June 06 20:26 BST (UK) »
I am seeking the 1841 census entry for the following family - who were living at 80 Broadwall, Southwark, Surrey in November 1839:-

James Thomas Sutton (born c1806) - sailmaker
Eliza Sutton (nee Clifford)
William John Sutton - son - born May 1836 - Southwark
Hannah Jane Sutton - born 1837
James Thomas Sutton - born November 1839

The next traces I have of any of the family are James (junior) 1861 - at sea on HMS Emerald, and Hannah Jane marrying Thomas Abbot of Hitchin, Herts, in 1855.

Many thanks in anticipation.

After over a year, I am still seeking  the 1841 census entry for James and his family - also, I am trying to find him in 1851.

His son James married Henrietta Harriett Knobbs in 1860 - and that is the only trace of him between his birth and the 1861 census entry .

Any trace of him - I keep checking the census entries but can't see any of them anywhere!! :(

Any help or advice appreciated

Thanks

Hi
Thanks for that reference - I will follow it up. The only problem is that there are quite a few Sutton families in the area. Still, at this stage, I am going to follow up every possible clue. I'll let you know what progress ( or lack of it!) has been made.

Still looking for the son (my great grandfather!!)

Thanks again.

Well, I checked out the reference - but the James Sutton who died at the Kings Head in 1840 was a Book keeper - though the witness was a Charlotte Sutton, which I will follow up as James's mother was possibly a Charlotte.

I ordered a couple of other certificates (death) more in hope than expectation - but no success.

1844 Bethnal Green - was a 2 month old child
1845 Bethnal Green was a 3 month old child

What would have been the earliest that James (junior) could have gone to sea?

So - still trying to knock down this brick wall!  Can find Eliza's (nee Clifford) family though - so not all bad news! :)

Oh - what a shame - and it could have been so right!!!

Thanks for letting me know anyway - I will just have to keep plodding on!

I can find a family of Sutton's on the IGI  - Richard and Charlotte who have several children including a James born 1806 ---- but I need to fill in the gaps and link them. Where was James in 1841/1851? I begin to think I will never know!

Many thanks once again.

Now I am greatly puzzled. Was checking Broadwall in 1841 and on one page, the numbers go from 52 to 98 and so on. I wonder what its about. Did the ennumerator get tired and skip a bit, most peculiar.
