Weddings in Newspapers
« on: Tuesday 20 June 06 23:55 BST (UK) »
I am just wondering how many people have looked through old newspapers to find wedding reports - I'm talking 'ordinary' families here of course.

Was it regular practice for working class families to have their wedding reported or even announced in the local paper 90 years ago? I have a wedding photo from 1915  and would like to know who the bridesmaid was, and in another, I am just trying to get my hands on an exact date.

Hi Ray

Maybe not over likely but possible - often just a short announcement ie. ............ son of .............. to marry ................. dau of ................. at ................. on ................ .

Sometimes, if the family were respected/in trade etc. there would be a full report ie. all presents received and from whom etc..

Many local papers did report ordinary weddings, with photos, because it sold papers.  It's well worth trying.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.
