Is this the same one? She's 51 and a washerwoman on the 1851. Living with her are sons Charles, 24 and James, 15, both born Manchester. There were quite a few when I looked.

Does it give a husband?

Hi skb,

It looks like Westmorland to me and I think the second word begins with E...there is an entry for an Engineer on the same page and the E is similar.

Regards,
Margaret :)

I'd say the Elizabeth that Koromo found in the 1841 is the right one - there are the following children with her:

Charles 14
Elizabeth 12
George 7
James 5

From what I can work out, they are living on Gartside Street - but I had to go back about 12 pages to find the street name!

So, Scotland, quite definitely in 1841, then. What about 1861  :-\

I've found the bapt of a James Morton, 6 Feb 1825, Manchester Cathedral, to a Samuel Morton and Elizabeth - Batch C097894.

But we also have an Elizabeth Morton, 25 Jan 1829, same place, C07895, to a George Morton and Elizabeth. Also a Martha on 7 Augist 1831
and Charles on 8th Oct 1826 (same batch as James above)

I've also had a re- look blown up really huge and it could be Eldon with a 'y' in the disabled col - but  :-\

Gosh - I turn my back for 5 minutes (well, ok, go for a good night's sleep) and look what happens.

Yes, I'm working on the basis that the 1841 reference found by Koromo is correct, though I think it's in Water St which is/was near Gartside St.

My Gr Gr Grandmother Elizabeth MORTON was living at 8 Bk Water St when she married John HOLMES in 1845. Her father was George MORTON, a soldier. I also suspect thet the lodger in 1851 (Harriet HULMES) may be Elizabeth (daughter's) Mother in law.

I've been unable to find Elizabeth (mother) after 1851. I think it's likely she died. In 1861, son Charles MORTON is living at 8 Bk Water St.

Very many thanks everyone for your interest. Any more thoughts on any of this are very welcome.
