Fresh eyes needed!!!!
« on: Friday 23 June 06 23:26 BST (UK) »
I have been tracing the Taylor branch of my tree and have so far definitely found them back to 1881 and possibly back to 1841. Prior to 81 the research gets a bit 'squiffy' and I am beginning to have serious doubts about my findings, what I would like is for you fabulous fellow RC's to have a look back past the 81 census to see if you find any alternative families that I may have overlooked! :) The main character of interest is a Robert Taylor born in Winkfield or Sunninghill, Berkshire between 1834-41, he married Maria Short from Windsor in 1862 and they had children named Annie, Henry, Frank & Emily. From the marriage certificate I know that his father was a John Taylor. He, Maria and children lived in Windsor. I am mostly interested in Roberts life before marriage and any possible census matches would be most welcome. Cheers JK

Hi JK

Why don't you post the 1881 census that you are certain is your family?

The surname is not uncommon, so if you can give all the details at your disposal that would help enormously.

For example, what is the father's occupation on the marriage cert?  Who were the witnesses?  Additionally, what is it that makes you think that you have been tracing the wrong family?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Arranroots, from the 1881

1 Rounds Court, Peascod Street
New Windsor, Berks

Robert Taylor, Head, 42, Barman, Berks, Sunninghill
Maria Taylor, Wife, 37, Berks, Windsor
Annie Alice, Dau, 17, Dressmaker, Berks, Windsor
Henry, Son, 16, Porter, Berks, Windsor
Frank, Son, 14, Shop Boy, Berks, Windsor
Emily, Dau, 10, Scholar, Berkshire, Clewer

RG11/1323
folio 106
pg 28

From the 1862 marriage certificate, registration district Eton at possibly Stoke Poges,
Robert calls himself a Wine Merchant
Robert's father was John Taylor, Gamekeeper.
The witnesses were
George Felix Gray
Mary Ann Short
John Ferryman
Ella Short

All fitting fine, in fact working back the 61 and 51 census both fit fine, I find Robert is single in both and living in Peascod Street as a Wine Cellarman in 61 and General servant in 51.
The problems are with the 71 and 41, I cant find Robert on the 71, I know where his wife and youngest daughter are but not him Annie, Henry & Frank. That's not such a big deal just frustrating ???. But when I look for Robert in 41 the match I find just seems a little odd given his future career and status. So I guess what I am asking is for someone else to look at 71 and 41 for possible matches.
Wow sorry that was so long winded, any help would be really appreciated, JK

Thanks Arranroots, any suggestions welcomed
perhaps it is just a case of riches to rags. I just dont see an ex Army Captain whose Son is at Cambridge Uni being a Gamekeeper and poor Robert being a General Servant whilst his Brother is a University scholar...... soooo frustrating. JK

Further question along the way - you have the marriage of TAYLOR/ SHORT - do you also have the birth cert of one or more of the children - specifically the one that is your ancestor?  Does this confirm the mother's maiden name?

Just trying to clarify

Yes I have the birth certificate of Frank (my Grt Grandfather) born 1867 which confirms Maria as a Short. At this point Robert is calling himself an Innkeeper!!! Frank was born in Grove Place, New Windsor but Robert puts his address as Egham Surrey. I tried to find him on the 71 in Surrey but found nothing. JK

Thanks for that - it is Frank I am chasing currently!  Shame we can't ask him what he was up to in 1871!

Were the ROBINSONs that his mother was with in 1871 related?  Where was Emily born, was it definitely Clewer?

;)

Emily is down as born Clewer in 1881 and Windsor 1871. Have no other evidence on this. I have no idea who the Robinsons are  ::), my only thought on this are that if John Marratt Taylor was Robert's brother he was vicar of Seer Green at that time.  Mind you I didnt find JMT on the 71!!!???
