Hello - I'm new to rootschat.  Does anyone have any info on Thomas Whately and his wife Harriet Dowell  - marriage, offspring.  Pre 1817.

Thanks!

Regards

BJ

Hi BJ
Welcome to Rootschat :D

Is this them?

1841
Lower Town, Colebrooke
Thomas Whately 45 Gardener N (born out of county)
Harriott do 50 N
John do 20 Ap Y (born in  county)
Charles do 10 Y
HO107/215/2 Pg9

As Thomas and Harriott were born out of county the marriage may well have been somewhere other than Devon. I'll see if I can find them in 1851 which would give a place of brith.

Here is another likely child

1841
Colebrooke, Devon
Thomas Whately 25 Gardener born out of county
in household of Richard Ebbels 55 wheelwright

This makes it even more likely the marriage wasn't in Devon

This is them in 1851

28 South St, Tormoham, Devon
Thomas Whately Head M 56 Gardener Warwickshire ?Tamworth
Harriett do Wife 63 Gardener's wife Gloucestershire ???ant
HO107/1872/318 Pg1

The writing is difficult to read so I'm not sure of town/villages of birth.
Thomas the younger is still in Colebrooke in 51 and gives his place of birth as Monmouthshire. It does look like the most likely place for the marriage is going to be one of these counties most likely Gloucs.
