Maria Hammond

  Searching for the Hamond family in the Saffron Walden area.  Maria Hammond was married in Saffron Walden to William Styles of Theydon in 1821.  Maria was born circa 1797.  Her family may have originated in Langley.  It is possible that Maria had a sister Rebecca.
Any information on the Hammond family please.

Hi Jean,
I'm not sure if the Maria Hammond you seek info about is related to my search for a Maria Hammond of Saham Toney, Norfolk, not far from Saffron Walden, born around 1823 according to the 1841 census so she was around 18 then.  In her household was  John Reed Hammond aged 50.  But my grandmother used to tell me a tale that a Maria Hammond took up with a Robert Thurston from the same area but she would never tell her parents where they married.  She had three children, ?Samuel Thurston, ?Rosalind or Rose and the eldest William (whose birth certificate I have passed down through our family).  She fled from Robert to Waterfoot in Rossendale with her children.  The story was, my grandfather was told, that every now and again a very fine carriage with coat of arms on the door used to visit their home in Waterfoot and the children were all told to stay out of the house until after it left.  The occupants were trying to establish the marriage of Maria and Robert but she would never say where this took place.  We suspect they never actually married.  Rumour was the Hammonds were very well to do hence the posh coach that used to visit and that Maria was their sole heir.  I have a pair of ivory opera glasses that purportedly belonged to her.  If this story wasn't true, where did they come from?  A census entry I found stated that at one time a sister named Maria and a niece named Elizabeth also lived with this Maria Hammond.  I don't know if these are related to your family at all but if it ties in with yours and you find out anything else, perhaps you could let me know?  With kind regards,

Maria Styles death registered Epping 1846 age 47   born circa 1798/99

The first child is Eliza Hammond Styles born 21 April 1821 bap 24 May 1821 Saffron Walden Buried at Theydon Garnon  6 October 1822.

So is Eliza her mother's name?.
It was usual to name the first daughter after the maternal grandmother, but not an absolute certainty, it could be maternal great grandmother.

2nd child is Rachel Langley Styles bap 10 Nov. 1822 buried 10 November 1822 also at Theydon Garnon

So the name surname Langley is important.

First son is Thomas and that is William Styles father's name, so named after paternal grand father

Ref: will of Thomas Styles of Latton 1837 names sons William and John and daughter Hannah Laundry? and grand daughter Elizabeth S--witt
William on census says he is from Latton Essex.

Maria Hammond baptized 29 July 1810 age 12 3/4 years so born circa 1797/8

parents are John and Sarah Hammond at Saffron Walden

Maria 1797 who was not baptized till she was 12 3/4 years old.

I believe John Hammond's (he was single) first wife was Mary Smith -widow married 16 December 1783 at Saffron Walden
They had
Susanna bap 1784 -

Mary was buried 28 May 1786 Saffron Walden.

The John Hammond for both these marriages signed his name.

There is another John Hammond who married Elizabeth Waller 24 January 1779 but he made his mark.

Her Father JOHN Doubleday, Roberts GEORGE Thurston.

I am a little confused as Maria/Robert are together on the 1851/1881 Census and have no children.

Maria died 3 Jul. 1883 Saham Toney age 61

There is a Maria DOUBLEDAY bapt 15 February 1823  Saham  to JNO/ANN

This is the Census you refer too. No children to Robert/Maria;
