« on: Sunday 25 June 06 22:30 BST (UK) »
I have just discovered my gggg grandmother's gravestone with all the family data on it according to it she died in 1855 so I would like  a lookup of the 1851 Fife census to find out where she was living Her name was ISABELLA or[BELLE]GOURLAY BORN 1769 married name AITKEN either in the CARHURLY KINGSBARNS area or the ARNCROACH CARNBEE area Also her daughter JANET AITKEN  born 1790  married to JAMES WATSON  a ships carpenter in 1819 in AnstrutherEaster. Thanks Josie

Hi Josie

I think it's probably just a typo on your part, but the marriage not birth of Janet Aitken to James Watson was in 1819.  From IGI, actual extract from OPRs:

JAMES WATSON  Marriages: Spouse:  JANET AITKEN
Marriage:  06 FEB 1819   Anstruther Easter, Fife, Scotland

In case you don't have this, these are the children showing for James and Janet on IGI, all submitted entries which would have to be verified:

1. PETER WATSON  Birth: 22 NOV 1821 Christening: 09 DEC 1821 Anstruther Easter, Fife, Scotland
2. ISABEL WATSON Birth: 10 DEC 1819 Christening: 10 JAN 1820 Anstruther Easter, Fife, Scotland
3. GEORGINA WATSON Birth: 03 AUG 1829 Christening: 31 AUG 1829 Anstruther Easter, Fife, Scotland
4. JANET WATSON Birth: 22 JUL 1826 Christening: 02 AUG 1826 Anstruther Easter, Fife, Scotland
5. JEAN WATSON Birth: 05 SEP 1823 Christening: 05 OCT 1823 Anstruther Easter, Fife, Scotland
6. ALEXANDER WATSON Birth: 19 JAN 1832 Anstruther Easter, Fife, Scotland
7. AITKEN WATSON Birth: 20 NOV 1835 Anstruther Easter, Fife, Scotland
8. ELIZABETH WATSON Birth: 22 JUL 1826 Christening: 02 AUG 1826 Anstruther Easter, Fife, Scotland

Regards.

In respect of Isabel Gourlay and Alexander and children, again from IGI, all actual extracts from the OPRs:

ALEXANDER AITKEN  Marriages: Spouse:  ISABEL GOURLAY
Marriage:  27 FEB 1789   Carnbee, Fife, Scotland

Children:
1. WILLIAM AITKEN  Birth: 21 APR 1798 Christening: 16 MAY 1798 Carnbee, Fife, Scotland
2. ROBERT AITKEN Birth: 13 FEB 1796 Christening: 21 FEB 1796 Carnbee, Fife, Scotland
3. DAVID AITKEN Birth: 28 MAY 1800 Christening: 14 JUN 1800 Carnbee, Fife, Scotland
4. ELIZABETH AITKEN Birth: 10 MAR 1792 Christening: 25 MAR 1792 Carnbee, Fife, Scotland
5. JANET AITKEN Birth: 27 APR 1790 Christening: 02 MAY 1790 Carnbee, Fife, Scotland
6. ALEXANDER AITKEN Birth: 10 MAY 1794 Christening: 25 MAY 1794 Carnbee, Fife, Scotland

From the 1841 Census, this looks like Isabel and some of the Watson grandchildren:

AITKEN       Alexr.       M       35       Farmer        Fife
        WATSON       Alexr.       M       9               Fife
        WATSON       Aitken       M       5               Fife
        GOURLY       Bell       F       60               Fife
        AITKEN       Elisabeth       F       37               Fife
WATSON       Jane       F       15       Female Servant        Fife
        WATSON       Georgina       F       11               Fife

Address: Carhurly, Kingsbarns-Fife

There is a death entry showing on Scotlands People, the official BMD and census site which is pay to view. I haven't viewed it just done the searches. The entry is in Carnbee for an Isabella Aitken other name Gourlay in 1855, with a birth year of 1770.

You are so fortunate to have found Isabella's grave. You might also want to view the actual cert. In 1855, the first year of official registration in Scotland, the BMDs are a wealth of info. By 1856, the info contained in these certs. had been pruned down from two pages to one.  Certainly worth a look!

In respect of the 1851 Census, I don't have access to it. I can see, however, an entry for an 80 year old Isabella Aitken in Carnbee from the free searches on SP.

Regards.

Thanks so much Monica for that I had some of the info but I wanted to find if James Watson and Janet Aitken were dead by 1851 since the children were at the uncle's farm in Kings barns I will certainly look up the death of Isabella Gourlay  next time I go to Edinburgh as another side of the family also a farmer in Denny died that year 1855 and there was a load of information on the death cert
Thanks again Josie
