Richard Gilmour
« on: Tuesday 27 June 06 13:13 BST (UK) »
I am trying to findout where my GGgrandfather came from.  His name was Richard Gilmour born Ireland in 1826.  His father was John, a carrier.  They were in the NE England from 1851 onwards.  John is believed to be from Londonderry.  Richard married Eleanor Hepplewhite from Easington in c1852.

Hello GreenG,

What denomination was the Gilmour family? Would they have been Catholics, members of the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland) or Presbyterians?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.
