McCarthys Originally from Swansea
« on: Tuesday 27 June 06 19:24 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for my great grandfather - Michael (Mike) McCarthy.  I can only trace him back to the 1881 census.  Before this its a mystery!!

On the 1881 census he's approx. 28 yrs old married to ANN and has three children CATHERINE, JOHN and DAVID.  They lived in Rheola Cottage, Neath.

I think he was born in the Swansea area approx. 1853.

If anyone can help I'd be more than grateful.  Thanks

Hi Cariadmawriol

Welcome to Rootschat!  :)

There are a number of possibles on earlier censuses, although no complete match, as you say.

Have you got any further info to help?

A birth cert for one of the children would give Ann's maiden name. A marriage cert would give both their father's names and occupations.

There were a surprising number of folk with Irish names in south Wales at the time, so any additional clues would be welcome.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi thanks for the replies.

Michael's wife's surname was Harrison (now my middle name!!) and I'm almost positive her fathers name was Hermit Harrison and they came from Resolven then spelt Resolfen.  Unfortunately thats about all the information I have.

Thanks again  :)

this looks like it could be the marriage
Michael McArty
Anne Harrison
1Q 1872 volume 11a pg 615

I can find an Ann Harrison on 1871 and 1861 census at Pentreclwyda, but the father's name is John. Ann's place of birth is given as Aberdare as in 1891.
1871 RG10/5433 folio 64 pg 10

could Hermit be a nickname?

Well done - you have been busy while I was asleep!

It sounds as though obtaining the marriage cert would still be a good idea - where did the marriage take place, Osprey?

;)
