"Bate"
« on: Friday 30 June 06 03:35 BST (UK) »
In the 1861 Census I have a person shown as a "Collector of Bates" as his occupation. Would anyone have any idea what he did?

In 1878 he was shown to be a Master Mariner on his son's marriage certificate.

Many thanks

Hi Canuc  :)
Could it actually be "Collector of Rates"?  Would make more sense - at least to me!    ;)

I agree with Prue, if you could post the census reference we could have a look just to make sure  :)

Thank you both.
I was doing a search for someone to demonstrate what RootsChat "does". I don't have the details.

You've given a successful demonstration and shown me some sense.
I suspect you are right to suggest that "R" is being read as "B"

The head of the household should have an middle initial "R" but is given as "B", so it is consistent.
