Remembering the Somme...
« on: Saturday 01 July 06 00:16 BST (UK) »
Today (1st July) is the 90th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of the Somme.
I hope you'll all join with me today in remembering the boys from both sides who fought, not only in this Battle, but in all wars, and especially give thanks to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Thankfully, my grandfather survived, but so many did not  :'( :'( :'(

Thank you, all you brave men (and women)  :)

We must all give thanks to those brave men, boys & girls who gave their all, what they went through was horrific

Watched a facinating programme the other day about a chap who survived the Somme, he is 110 now (what a survivor) he graphically recalls how it actually was.

We must remember and we will! God bless them and thank you

Cal

That was Henry Allingham and he lives in Eastbourne.  An incredible man, who everytime I see him on TV he seems to get younger instead of older.  How priveleged we are to still be able to hear the story first hand.

God bless all those young men that went over the top for us!  We won't forget!

Kerry, my thoughts entirely with regards to Mr Allingham. I am at a church flower festival today having been asked to do a small display on the history of the village. Within the display of photograph's being shown I have placed one of William Hansell Robinson in his uniform, a young man who went to war and never came back. Although William lived in the village for a short spell he will be remembered today. William is buried at The Sunken Road Cemetery, Fampoux, Pas de Calais Frances he was only 20 when he was killed in action.

My Great Uncle Eli Cook was killed on the Somme and I have watched with interest many programmes that have been on the TV this week.  In particular the progress of the memorial march of descendents of Somme veterans and the emotional journey they have all been on.

We won't ever forget

Brave, Brave, Men!

Finding my G Uncle,
Ben Thomas, Private in the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry 1st/4th Bn. Serv. No. 4807
Died aged 19, 16/08/1916 Buried at Thiepval.

made me so sad at the lost of a young life and so many thousands with him. I never knew any of my family were in WW1 until I delved into Genealogy. I found Ben, just before Armistice Day last year and it brought home to me the sacrifice made for our life we have today.
I felt he was forgotten in the mists of time but now he has family who think of him with the pride he deserves.
