What happened to a suicide?
« on: Monday 03 July 06 14:49 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

Forgive for this rather depressing topic folks, but I was wondering whether any other researchers out there had discovered evidence of a suicide in their family being granted a "proper" burial in consecrated ground?

I've been told by numerous people over the years that it was against Church Law in the Victorian period, but is there any evidence to support this? Or was it down to the discretion of the rector/vicar?

Hi Brig

Thank you very much for the link.  I'll certainly have a look at it.  Suicide has always been a subject that's interested me.  An ancestor of mine hung himself in 1847.  As a result of this the family were separated.  His burial was mentioned in the parish register.
