Michael Hastie 1786-1821
« on: Tuesday 04 July 06 11:01 BST (UK) »
I am trying to discover information regarding the possible marriage and descendants of the above.   Michael Hastie was born in Chatton , Northumberland, England in 1786 and moved with his parents and siblings to Hutton, Berwickshire.   Not sure of the year, but it was definitely before 1819.

I was given the following information from a newspaper "1821 Jun9.  Died on the 24th ult Mr Michael Hastie, Stone Mills, Aberdeenshire, 2nd son of Mr Peter Hastie, Hutton Mill, Berwickshire."   I suspect it was a Berwickshire newspaper.

I would like to find out of Michael ever married and had any descendants.

Any help given to Whispers (Down Under) would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

That's great that you have found Michael's birth details. In case you don't have these, the following are siblings showing on IGI:

1. ELIZABETH HASTY  Christening: 05 NOV 1795 Chatton, Northumberland, England
2. JOHN HASTY Christening: 25 OCT 1791 Chatton, Northumberland, England
3. PETER HASTY Christening: 23 APR 1800 West Chapel Presbyterian-Nc, Wooler, Northumberland, England
4 ROBERT HASTY Christening: 25 SEP 1794 Chatton, Northumberland, England
5. JANE HASTY Christening: 04 MAR 1797 Chatton, Northumberland, England
6. MICHAEL HASTY Christening: 22 SEP 1786 Chatton, Northumberland, England
7. WILLIAM HASTY Christening: 11 MAY 1788 Chatton, Northumberland, England
8. MARY HASTY Christening: 22 JUN 1784 Chatton, Northumberland, England
9. THOMAS HASTY Christening: 28 JUN 1785 Chatton, Northumberland, England

Michael would appear to have been the second born son, following Thomas.

This also looks like Peter and Elizabeth's marriage:

PETER HASTEY  Spouse:  ELIZABETH MOFFET
Marriage:  30 MAY 1782  Wooler, Northumberland, England

Thank you Monica.   I do appreciate your kind assistance.   It's not so easy undertaking genealogical research from so far away, but the internet and kind people like you that make it far more possible.   You're a star!

Just an idea for you to follow up. I did a quick check on Scotlands People, the official pay to view BMD and census site. If Michael did marry I wonder if he had any children that were called after him. There is only one Michael Hastie showing for the whole of Scotland in the 1841 Census and that's in Hutton, Berwick. He shows as age 16 which would appear to maybe be a little bit young to be son of Michael but census ages weren't always accurate so worth checking out. There are in total 15 Hasties showing in Hutton, including a Peter age 80 who may well be Michael's father still alive.

Unfortunately, Berwickshire is not yet been transcribed on FreeCen so I haven't been able to check out the household that Michael age 16 is in. I don't know if you have access to Ancestry as they now have the 1841 census index for Scotland on line.  You may also wish to view the census yourself on Scotlands People at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  It is a pay to view site, but the charges are reasonable.

Regards.

You are indeed correct Monica  - Michael's father, Peter lived until 1843 and died at Broadmeadows, Hutton.   The 16 year old Michael is a son of Thomas Hastie, the above Michael's older brother.    We've done quite well really with Peter Hastie's children, all except for this Michael, and it was only the kind assistance of a lady in Hutton who gave me the newpaper extract, that I ever knew that he had found his way up to Aberdeenshire.

Of course, you're quite right Monica - the 1841 Census for Scotland is the way to go.   I'll go that way.

Kindest regards

Thank you Beckey.   I do have this information from David Cargill's MIs.  I made a trip overseas to Berwick-Upon-Tweed Record Office last year and quickly recorded as many Hasties as I could during my short visit there.   David Cargill's work enabled me come home and to identify my g-g-grandmother's family - oh the joy!

Do you know if David Cargill is still alive?

Kind regards

Hi Whispers,

Sorry. don't know if David Cargill is alive or not, only got the 3 books at the end of last year and they were published 2000/01 by the Scottish Genealogy Society, (by the way I did mean 1970).

They have proved very useful in finding some of my wife's ancestors.

Another avenue for you to follow up would be to try and find a Monumental Incription, MI, for Michael. You have his death dates and age/location. Not sure where Stone Mills is, but if you could find the local cemetery(ies), you might find that MIs are available either through a look up request here on RootsChat or directly via booklets from the local history group (www.anesfhs.org.uk).

If you are lucky to find anything, it might also include some additional family info.
