How old is grandma?
« on: Wednesday 05 July 06 19:09 BST (UK) »
I know when this photo was taken - 1857, the year the baby was born (it's a glass plate photo, interestingly).  She's with her grandma, and the question is, which grandma.  One was born in 1777 and so would have been 80.  The other was born in 1788 and so would have been 69.  What do you think?
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

Have to say it is a lovely photo
I see your point which one is she
If you know the birth of the baby and the date of the photo can you not work it out

I knew you probably have done this but if not have you looked on the 1851 census to see if they were both alive then or had one died

They were both alive in 1851 (and both called Jane).  I really wanted opinions on whether the lady in the photo looks closer to 80 or to 69.

Hi Suttontrust

I think it is the younger one, I looked and looked and looked and yes I could be totally wrong, but I just don't feel she looks quite 80!

could be either - but she does seem to have very dark hair and a lot of it - which may point to her being younger.  And she maybe would be more wrinkled if she was 80 !

That is a tricky one. I've noticed that people tended to look older than their years back then. Well we could all say that she looks about 80 but is actually the 69-year-old. Personally, I think she's the older nana (which probably means that she's really the younger one!  ;)) By the way, which side of the family does she look more like? (Or doesn't she!!!!!  ;D)
