I received one this week.  It arrived only one day after it was predicted to be sent out, but, yes, they are taking a few weeks.  I think they're starting to get caught up now, as I had one a couple of weeks ago that was late.

How long, oh Lord, how long?

When I started this lark, 3 or 4 years ago, one received certificates from the GRO within a week and from local offices by return of post.  One could email a record office, get a very quick reply and cheerful service and only pay for the photocopying and postage.  Now the GRO says June 9th for the one certificate I've ordered there, and I'm still awaiting a response from Colchester about the other three.  Record offices have downloadable research forms, pay twenty quid in advance.  Essex record office says waiting times are 4 - 6 weeks, and I expect Suffolk will say the same.  Yes, I understand why, of course I do, but I can't help wondering whether all this delay is going to dampen the enthusiasm of newcomers, who will just lose interest if they have to wait a month between each bit of the puzzle.

A few weeks ago I got a death certificate from a local office (Merthyr, I think it was).  Took 3 weeks, which is strangely unsual for a local office in my experience.

Certainly must be all these TV programs causing more demand, thus running them off their feet. ::)

I got a response from the Suffolk Record Office today to my recent request (and payment) for research - parish registers look-up.  It's a form letter saying that it will take seven to eight weeks
This is just plain daft.  I've been in local government and know the difficulties in taking on staff.  But they're really missing a trick here.  Why not take on temporary staff?  Students?  Even volunteers?
