 :) :) :) :) :) :)

I think I liked this programme best,  (a) because I like Sue Johnson a lot and,  (b) it was the kind of down to earth journey most of us have been on at one time or another.

My beef is the time wasting 'chat' at the beginning - firstly, we had Bill Oddie prattling on in that irritating way he has, then Amanda Redman who drove about all over the place before getting anywhere , and last night we were bored stiff with the workings of railway engines and trips to York Museum.  This is usually the time when I am shouting at the TV  'get on with it will you - lets see some record searching" - an outsider watching would think I was totally bonkers

It's Jeremy Clarkson next week (yawn) searching for lost family treasure (yawn) - yet another one who loves the sound of his own voice.

I was fascinated by the second DYKWYA? programme because some of it took place in Falmouth which is only 2 miles from Penryn, my home town, so I actually knew some of the people.  The lady, Mrs Dalton, who Cyril had an affair with, well her daughter Diane who was with her is well known in Falmouth.  And I also recognised Derek, the illigitimate child of Cyril's. So for local people, even those not into genealogy, it was fascinating to see.

Oh wow how a thread gets hijacked well to set a few people straight.  The program makers have gone into the difficulties of how to trace your family history but they have failed to understand that not all the population as sky freeview or cable.  The programs aren't about genealogy really they are about good tv.  Watch out for Lesley Garratts one she as a murder that is adjudged by the coroner to be suicide.  Oh last nights prog btw Sue did a lot of the work herself ( thats what they said yet I know someone who worked on that program and he used a pro researcher ( not the one on the prog neither )

Despite Paul echoing my comments on the first episodes, I have to agree with the positive comments on this one.  This episode certianly made a large leap towards what I expected from the series, after all the hype.

Lets hope they continue with the progress.

I don't think the programme is all bad, but as someone said for the old pro's it doesn't really teach us/them anything.

Looking to next week, I will try and get it taped as im working, though I can not see it being a great sucsess. I find Mr. Clarkson  aragant on TV and believe this will also show on WDYTYA.

Hi,  My twopenneth:  ;D

This was the best so far,  I have Railway ancestors so that part was interesting,  and it would fire up a newbie I imagine  BUT

Sue wore the same grey suit all through the programme,  giving the impression that it all took place in one day.

We are seeing the finds,  but none of the,  Oh he isn't therewhere was he during the census nightI can't find a marriage record.  It is all giving the impression that it is easy,  there are no futile searches,  no whole days spent getting nowhere.

We all know about brick-walls,  and everyone has one,  even if it is only a temporary set-back.  Giving the impression that family history is easy,  not talking enough about confirming details,  and jumping to wild conclusions on the flimsiest of evidence is not real family history.

It is great telly,  Sue was lovely,  very engaging,  and she (or her researcher) unearthed a fascinating story,  but,  it gives a very false impression of what genealogy is really about.

I feel that it will lead to many people jumping in with both feet,  imagining they can trace their family back to Adam,  and they will end up disappointed by their false expectations.  It is a fascinating,  engrossing and ultimately rewarding pastime,  but easy it aint.  :-\

A bit late but I thought a reply about this was at the time showig off.  3 weeks before the show was aired I received an E-mail from someone who worked on that program asking if I could do some follow ups as they had forgotten some information.  Unluckily for me Carlisle was too far because the money they offered would have been nice.  Just shows even the people they employed made mistakes.  This wasn't shown but the information they wanted was alluded to in the voice over.  I think they did make the point though a lot in the 5 minute chats that it wasn't all plain sailing.  Now if only I hadn't missed the last one.  Any one got a copy they could sell me or upload for me to watch please
