Have checked the 1891 Census, and believe it or not, there are:

1010 people called James Ellis
186 people called Caroline Ellis
1486 people called George Ellis (non born in Gorton)
1266 people called Sarah Ellis

In order to narrow the field down a bit -
Could you please give me a bit more information such as their anticipated age in 1891

Will then have another look for you

All ages are approximate as sometimes they would lie, and sometimes they would tell the truth, which makes it more fun for us .

I know that 2 of James and Caroline's children were living at the 1881 address (Hannah and James) in 91 but have no idea about the parents.

Thankyou for providing an approximate age for your ancestors; I have this morning spent about 40 mins looking for them with the following results:

James Ellis – 68 – only 5 matches, although all are Head of Household, non are shown as Widowers or have a wife named Caroline. Also checked for age 67 (3 persons) and age 69 (4 persons) - but no match with your info.
Caroline – 71 – only 1, living with brothers and sisters in Canterbury. Also checked for age 70 (0 persons) and 72 (1 person) - but again no matches with your info.
George – 43 – only 11 matches, but non that look as though they are connected. Also checked for age 42 (18 persons – non born Gorton) and age 44 (12 persons) – but non that look as if they fit.
Sarah – 43 – only 13 matches, but non that fit with your info. Also checked for age 42 (14 matches) and age 44 (23 matches) – but nothing matches up with your information.

So where do I go from here - have you any further info at all?

They have got to be there somewhere, but as yet, we are not pressing the right buttons.

Hey Chris,

Thanks for all the time that you have already put into looking.

I can't think of all that much more info, at least that will be helpful but I guess you never know so here goes.

The only other thing that I can tell you about James and Caroline is that their other child that I haven't mentioned so far is Joseph who would be around 39 in 1891 and that his oldest child can't be more than 10 if he got married in between the census'.

George and Sarah had the 2 children that I know of James Henry/Harry (who was with the grandparents in the 81 Census and would now be 21 if he is still at home) and Caroline who would be around 12 (unless she died). They had boarders living with them, Elizabeth Bird and her 3 children but have no idea if they were just some of many or what. So hard to guess at these things.

Sarah's occupation was a frame tenter and George's was a self actor minder.

I can't seem to think of anything else to tell you. Most everything that I know came from the 81 Census and that is it. I hope this helps, but if not thank you for trying .
