Welsh regiments WW1?
« on: Saturday 08 July 06 22:26 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know which regiment a man from Caernarfon in North Wales might have joined in WW1?
I only know that before the war he was a bricklayer, born Benjamin Bryan c1880 in Caernarfon. He was gassed, but survived the war. I'm trying to find information to possibly locate his service record.
Bryan - Caernarfon,  Mid Wales, Shropshire
Davies - Amlwch - Anglesey and Caernarfon
Elcox -  Kington - Herefordshire and S.Wales ,
Hodges - Dymock - Gloucestershire and S.Wales
Pope - Tenbury Wells - Worcestershire, Hope Bagot -Shropshire
Morvan - Herefordshire
Levy - Aldgate, Spitalfields, Whitechapel, Hackney, Holland
Wywiecki/Wiewiecki - Belchatow - Poland, East London

it would depend mostly on when he joined up. pre 1916, there's a good chance it would be a local welsh regiment, after it could be any regiment

Hi sianb

If he was gassed he obviously went to France, and therefore probably would have obtained some kind of medal, as they gave them for entering the theater of war.  There are 4 Benjamin Bryan's on The National Archives Website.  Here's the search result page

And only 10 if you search for B Bryan.  None are obviously from a Welsh Regiment, but these names are worth baring in mind during your research.

Thanks Wendy.
I had looked on that site, but as you say, none are obviously Welsh regiments.
I would imagine he was conscripted as none of the family had had previous military connections (his brothers were all merchant seamen) and he would have been in his mid 30's - so he could have ended up in any regiment.
Back to the happy hunting ground  ::)

From Caernarfon I would hazard a guess that the Royal Welch Fusiliers would be his reg, their museum is in Caernarfon Castle.
Humphreys - Llanbedrog, Bangor; Gleave - Stockport, Manchester; Pattie - Dumfriesshire; Brown - Edinburgh; Vowell - Co. Durham, Devon; Woodward - Egginton; Sheldon - Dudley; Wills - Bath; Morrissey - Co. Tipperary; Curran - Co. Kerry; Wilde - Macclesfield; McHenery - Co. Tipperary;

we can all guess but after 1916 soldiers, either volunteers or conscripts went to where they needed  ;)

sian, do you know where his medals are?  they will have his service number on

Hi Harribob,

That's triggered a memory from my childhood. I think there used to be a box with some medals in my parents house. perhaps they were his. I'll look next time I get to go down there.

Thanks to all who've helped.
