Frederick George Witting Patten
« on: Sunday 09 July 06 16:00 BST (UK) »
I would be very grateful for help in solving this mystery and finding out who was Frederick’s father.

1860 March quarter - Braintree 4a 348……Frederick George Witting Patten.

Baptism at Braintree, St Michael the Archangel     D/P 264/1/25
1861 Mar 29: Frederick George, son of Thomas & Mahala Patten, Braintree, Labourer

I find it odd that the Baptism names Thomas Patten as father….Mahala never married, and she and Frederick were with her father William in the census.

Were there any Witting/Whitting/Whiting families in the Braintree/Bocking area in the 1861 census?

Are you sure they are the same Frederick?   In Halstead in 1861 is Mahala Patten and Fredk age 2.   RG9 1110 F86 p24
so it is not an uncommon name in the area.
Buying the certificate would sort it once and for all.

Hi andrea,

Thanks for the help.....I can see what your thinking.

Would very much appreciate details of the Halstead census, as it is only a few miles from Bocking/Braintree, where most of the Pattens that I have are.
They may be related to my Pattens.....I already have three Mahalas in the family

Hi Andrea,

Thanks for the details.......I've spent all day matching as much as I could.

The Mahala working in the asylum is the mother of Charles and Mahala.....Charles' mother's name was Maria and he had a sister Lydia, so I assume that he combined them when naming his daughter.

I still can't come to grips with 2X unwed Mahalas having sons named Frederick at roughly the same time a few miles apart ???

I think that I will try to a posting to see if there were any witting/whitting
families in the Bocking/Braintree area at the time.

Who was his mother?

Hi Andrea,

Duuuuhhh ! If I had brains I'd be dangerous.

I should have said his Mother's name was Mahala born abt. 1800...father's name James born abt. 1799.

So much for my theory about his daughter's name.

Sorry :-\ :-\ :-\
