Mission Impossible ??
« on: Monday 10 July 06 03:39 BST (UK) »
I have a William Barnes/Barns who married a n Ann/Hannah ?
William was born in 1768, and may have been a publican in the Higham area.
They had at least 2 children, William and RObert......

I am wondering if there is any way I can find out who William Barnes/Barns  married. She was  (Anne ?hannah ???Somebody, I think) and who Williams Parents were.

I am in New Zealand, so would need address' of places to write to.

Their son, William Barnes/Barns married 1. an Ackhurst then 2. Sarah Snelling.

If anyone has these names on their tree, I would love to correspond.

Also Osmotherlys and Rolf/Rolfe/Roffs  fit in along the way.

Kind regards

Kozmos

Hi Kozmos
Are you a member of Curious Fox?
If not go to http://www.curiousfox.org.uk and look up Osmotherly.
Of course it could be your own message....

Can you give us any more clues to go on? Is Higham in Kent?
Cheers, Rian.

HI Rian,

Thankyou for reminding me about curiousfox. No, I am not a member but I see a posting there for a George and Ann Barnes in Reed st Cliffe, which also happens to be the same street where my Osmotherly ancestors lived in the 1851 census.
The Osmotherlys' marriied into the Barnes family twice within a few yrs.
Definately a connection there.

Cheers

Yes....Lower higham apparently is only a few miles from Cliffe.  I was chatting to a lady a year or so ago who thought that Anne/Hannahs maiden name Painter or Paynter but lost contact with her.

William, b 1768 may have had a brother names James Barnes who may have married a charlotte or Elizabeth.

A lot of Maybees I know,

Cheers

Hi Kozmos,

I did some look ups for this family for Mat a while ago, to which you added some comments:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,75603.0.html

The 1851 census entry for Ann Barns, living in Higham, shows a birthplace of Clare, Suffolk, and for her son Robert, Newton in Cambridge. Given his age in 1851 as 56, he would have been born around 1795.

The IGI shows a marriage for William Barns and Hannah Painter, in St Nicholas Rochester, in 1794. It also shows a christening for William Barns, son of William and Hannah, in St Werburgh, Hoo, in 1798. I've checked the original entries for both of these events on the cityark website.

http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/

For the marriage in 1794, both parties are shown 'of this parish' and Hannah is described as a widow.

I think that you may be looking at two separate families here, one William marrying an Ann, the other marrying a Hannah. If it is the same family, then they were extremely mobile. It may be useful to post on the Cambridge board, and try and get the christening details for Robert in Newton. This will confirm that his father was William Barns.

Have you also got any census entries for William, who married Sarah Snelling, or had he died before 1841? The census entries would show his place of birth, and if Suffolk or Cambridge, then that could link him to Ann and Robert.

Can anyone else find add anything that would link these people together. Hopefully, someone else can suggest ways to get round this bottleneck.

Thankyou for your work on this "Pickle" Carol.

No, I have no access to the census" apart from 1881 and 1901.
William died in 1859.
The eldest child of his second marriage was Emily was born in 1836,
hIS FIRST WIFE WAS aNN Akhurst, but that still doesn't tie that Ann in with the Older Ann.
I will try the Cambridge Board  later as well.

Kind Regards

Hi Kozmos,
Here are some Higham census entries that relate to your William:
1841 ref HO107 459-07 folio 10 page 13: Higham Hall, Higham
William Barnes age 40 farmer
Sarah age 25
Ann age 14
Emily age 4
Thomas age 2
Frederic age 1
all born in county

1851 ref HO107 1609a folio 298 page 23: Higham Hall, Higham
William Barnes head mar age 52 farmer of 115 acres employing ? (some men and labourers) born Hoo
Sarah wife mar age 37 born Meopham
William son age 23 born Higham
James son age 22 born Higham
Frederick son age 10 scholar born Higham
Harriot dau age 9 scholar born Higham
Edward son age 6 born Higham
Sarah dau age 4 born Higham
Albina dau age 2 born Higham

1861 ref RG9 474 folio 141 page 23: New House Farm, Higham
Sarah Barnes head wid age 46 farmer of 100 acres employing 5 men 4 boys born Higham ..... Blind
Harriet dau un age 18 born Higham
Edward son age 16 born Higham
Walter son age 8 scholar born Higham
Esther dau age 10 scholar born Higham
Arthur son age 6 scholar born Higham
Alice E dau age 2 born Higham

I've checked some of the children's baptisms at Higham on the cityark website, and the vicar thoughtfully sometimes added the wifes maiden name against them, which in these instances show 'Snelling'.

With William shown as born Hoo on the 1851 census, it looks as though he was the William christened in Hoo in 1798, parents William Barns and Hannah, and it is increasingly looking like the family of Ann and Robert, also in Higham, is totally unrelated to your family, and just one of those 'red herrings' sent to confuse us!!

Happy hunting,
xx Carol

Hi Carol,

Thankyou very much for all the work you have done for me.

It gives me a great deal of satisfaction to be able to  extend the "Tree"

It looks like the older children are from the first mariage alright.

You are a wee treasure.
Kindest Regards

Hi Kozmos
Not sure if you have checked the Higham Church yard MIs on
www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/MIs/MIsHigham/01.htm

No 94 has William BARNS of this Parish died 14 Oct 1836 in 68th year. Ann wife of above died 6 May 1854 aged 90.

There are more BARNS/BARNES family listed there.
Hope this helps.
