« on: Monday 10 July 06 13:31 BST (UK) »
This is Susannah (now Evans), Thomas and William on the 1861 Census but cannot trace the rest of the Davies family for the same year or 1871

David Evans. Head. 23. Collier. Glamorgan. Cadoxton Neath.

Susannah. Wife. 21.                                               ditto
Thomas Davies. Br-in-Law. 18 Collier                     ditto

how about this family for 1861
Cwm Row, Cadoxton RG9/4092 folio 86 pg 22
Thomas Davies head mar 52 labourer in engine manufactory b. Carmarthen, Eglwys Cymym
Sarah wife 52 attending house duties b. Carms, Eglwys Cymyn
John son 24 copperman b. Carms, Eglwys Cymyn
Susan dau 20 at home b. Cadoxton
Thomas son 18 hauling coal on canal b. Cadoxton
Richard son 10 scholar b. Cadoxton

names are ok and places of birth. Thomas and Sarah have aged a bit and Thomas seems to be on both entries and no David. The railway was built in the Neath valley in the 1850s and from then on, the canal was used less and there were fewer jobs on the canal which would explain changes of job. I'll have a look in 1871.

Thanks Osprey.

That is what confused me too, ages of parents & Thomas... .....and Susan!!

My Susannah is with David, plus her brothers in the 1861, so this can't be her family...can it? I can't find another Davies family to fit in with 1861 Census details going forward or backword.

I even  wondered if the parents had died so the family split up, and that's why two of the brothers were with Susannah & David. Even with those two the only possible marriage (1954) for them makes them 14 & 16 (sent for certificate).

I would  appreciate any advice you can give.

I was just merrily trying to find them in 1871 when I realised the problem with Susan and Susannah! eeek! I really don't know what to suggest - there's so many Davies families around that finding the sons when they are older isn't easy. I'd just found this family in 1871 which might fit the family I found in 1861
Cwm Row, Cadoxton RG10/5437 folio 71 pg 2
Thomas Davies son u 28 labourer
Richard Davies son u 22 collier
David Hughes head mar 30 collier
Susan Hughes wife mar 31
William Hughes son 9
Sarah Hughes dau 1
all born Cadoxton - there don't seem to be any parents for the first 2 who are somebody's sons.
I'm just wondering whether the couple were married the weekend of the census and were enumerated in two places - clutching at straws, I think
I think a glass of something and another search of Cadoxton for me.

Pour me one too ;D

I am digging around amongst my pile of papers, I have seen Cwm Road somewhere else.

Susannah & David married 1st quarter 1954..that would fit in with your theory...I'm  too much of a newbie to have theories yet :D

Thanks for your knowledge at digging...takes me ages.

Oops...that wouldn't fit in with the marriage I found 1854 was not a census year....silly me ???

I think you have spotted two of the children in that census, I have looked for deaths, and there was a Thomas & Sarah in the same qtr  1852. 11a 244. Neath...suppose it would account for all the circumstances.

Cwm Road was in a pile of... Censi? I had kept just in case.

Back to digging.

still no joy and I'm going to be dreaming Davies tonight but I do have a suggestion for their marriage unless you've come acrosss this one before.
3Q 1859 Neath there is a Susannah Davies on vol 11a pg 595 with another male and female. There's also a David Evans who is the fifth person and(possibly) odd male on page 593. I've looked at 2 different versions of the scan and am not convinced it's 593. The Freebmd original image wouldn't work for me at all which is a pity as these are usually really clear. So, it might be worth trying the GRO with ref 11a pg 595 if Neath can't help you.

I seem to remember from previous posts that you have them in 1871 RG10/5438 folio 67 pg 23. Do you have the family in 1841 HO107/1421/6 folio 6 pg 4. Unless it's the 1851 family that's wrong?  I'll have another search tomorrow if no-one else has managed to find them in the mean time.

Thank you so much for going to all that trouble...I have been searching most every night, and do dream of it now...

I have looked at that marriage entry for 1859, 11a 595 and 11a 593 so many times, on Free and 1837, and wondered if it is a mistake possibly the original entry

After searching from 1851-1861, the 1854, and the one above are the only two possibilities but maybe I missed something as I was goggled eyed in the end.

I have the feeling that the 1871 family is another Davies family...the 1841  HO 107/1421/6 could be either of them. When I searched Richard, another boy of that name was born Cadoxton neath same year.

I know how much trouble you have gone to for me, and really appreciate it.
